Common Myths About Chiropractic Care - Are Chiropractors Real Doctors?

More and more studies are showing benefits of going to the chiropractor. Yet, in the medical community, as well as widespread public knowledge, there still remain several misconceptions, or rather misbeliefs, about this type of treatment.

Huge Myth - Chiropractors aren’t as qualified as medical doctors.

Chiropractic treatment and medical treatment often run in different, but parallel lanes. Medical treatment typically relies on chemical or surgical means of treating the body, whereas chiropractic care uses techniques and ways to help the body heal itself naturally. Chiropractors, like doctors, have to attend four years of pre-medical education, where they learn different things in various scientific studies. After their undergraduate degree, chiropractors are required to complete 4-5 years of education at an accredited chiropractic college. During this time, chiropractic students spend more than 4200 hours studying and learning about the body in the classroom, in a laboratory, as well as in the clinic.

Indeed, our necks and spines are nothing to trust to just any individual to assess and treat. So it is understandable that one might be apprehensive about seeing someone other than a medical doctor. However, doctors are primarily trained to treat symptoms, where chiropractors understand how to find the source of what is causing the problem and they are trained to help body begin to heal itself.

We encourage you to look for a chiropractor who does more than basic adjustments. You want someone who has a deep understanding and experience using various forms of non-traditional, holistic treatments, so that you, the patient, aren’t wedged into a treatment plan that doesn’t include a full balance of options for you.

These types of treatments include nutrition, advanced sports chiropractic care, spinal decompression, electro-stimulation, acupuncture and more.  These and others, along with the proper treatment plan can provide an individual long-term benefits and improved health. The chiropractor is also going to know how to provide instruction for someone to continue the success of the treatment by supplementing it with stretches and exercises to be performed at home or at the office.

As you are deciding on which chiropractor is right for you, speak to them and find out the breadth of their capabilities, their education and their experience. Further, pay attention to their demeanor and perhaps scheduling an initial examination will give you insight into their bedside manner and how well they take ownership of helping you achieve your health and wellness goals.
